1940 Sept.

Bonegilla Camp occupied by the army. Used for training service personnel during the war years.

1944–47  

Some blocks at Bonegilla used to accommodate Italian prisoners-of-war.

1947 Nov.

Bonegilla selected as a Migrant Reception and Training Centre.

Dec.

Arrival of first contingent of displaced persons. Army provides transport, security and catering services. Ex-service personnel usually in charge of operations.

1949–50  

Surge in number of arrivals. Centre extended to double its capacity. Army withdraws. Additional reception centre opens in Bathurst. Bonegilla very busy and crowded.
